Anyone can find words eventually, but a few habits make the hunt faster and more satisfying. These techniques work on any grid, from a child's easy puzzle to a dense multi-direction challenge.
Instead of reading whole words, pick a rare or distinctive first letter, such as Q, Z, J, or X, and scan the grid only for that letter. When you find it, check the surrounding cells for the rest of the word. Uncommon letters appear rarely, so this narrows the search fast.
Sweep the whole grid left to right for across words, then top to bottom for down words, then along the diagonals. Committing to one direction at a time stops your eyes from darting and missing words that were right in front of you.
Cross off each word as you find it so you never re-hunt a solved one. Tackle the longest words first: they span more of the grid and are easier to spot, and removing them clears visual clutter for the short words.
Long words often start or end at a grid edge because they need room to fit. Scanning the borders and corners first frequently turns up the biggest words quickly.
Words with double letters, like BALLOON or COFFEE, create an eye-catching pattern. So do common pairs such as TH, CH, and ING. Spotting the pattern points you straight to the word.
On harder puzzles, once the easy across and down words are gone, deliberately read right to left and along both diagonals for the stragglers. Knowing the remaining words must be hiding in those directions focuses the search.
